Chimborazo 7 day with Glacier training is a 7-day mountaineering expedition in Ecuador built around a summit of Chimborazo (6,263 m), the highest point in Ecuador and the closest point on Earth to the sun. Starting in Quito, the trip follows a carefully structured acclimatization plan — free time in the capital, a summit hike of Rucu Pichincha, and multiple nights at Chimborazo Basecamp Lodge — before a dedicated glacier training day and the final ascent. Guided by certified ASEGUIM guides, it's a serious high-altitude adventure designed to maximize your chances of a successful summit.

A standout feature is the full Glacier School, where your ASEGUIM guide teaches the essential mountaineering techniques you'll need — crampons, ice axe, harness, rope systems, glacier travel, and self-arrest — before the climb. Highlights include the scenic Rucu Pichincha acclimatization hike via Quito's high-altitude Teleférico, the drive along the Avenue of the Volcanoes to Riobamba, wildlife at Chimborazo Basecamp, and a summit push across glaciated terrain toward the Veintimilla and Whymper summits, timed for sunrise. The pace is demanding, with a midnight summit departure and a long climb of 6–7 hours at extreme altitude, so a high level of fitness and preparation is essential.

The price includes ASEGUIM guides, transportation, meals at the refuges, water and snacks, mountain refuge accommodation, climbing permits, adventure insurance, and climbing gear. Guests need to bring their own backpack (a 20–30 liter attack pack), sunglasses, snow goggles, and inner layer gloves, and should budget for tips (suggested $10 or more) and international airfare to Ecuador, arranged separately.

Day 1 — Quito Arrival

Arrive at Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO), where the team meets you and transfers you to Quito Basecamp, a cozy hostel in the historic district. The rest of the day is free to relax after your flight, organize equipment, and begin adjusting to the altitude. Overnight at Quito Basecamp.

Day 2 — Quito Free Day

After breakfast, spend a free day exploring Quito, the world's first UNESCO World Heritage city. Wander the Historic Center's colonial churches, plazas, museums, and cafés at your leisure. The relaxed day doubles as valuable altitude acclimatization. Overnight at Quito Basecamp.

Day 3 — Rucu Pichincha

After breakfast, ride Quito's Teleférico cable car from 2,950 m up to around 4,000 m, then hike to the Rucu Pichincha summit (4,696 m). The round trip takes 4–6 hours, with panoramic views over Quito and, on clear days, surrounding volcanoes. Return by cable car for an evening at leisure. Overnight at Quito Basecamp.

Day 4 — Chimborazo Basecamp

Depart Quito at 8:00 a.m. for the 3.5-hour drive along the Avenue of the Volcanoes to Riobamba. At the office, complete paperwork and a full equipment inspection, then drive an hour into the Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve to Chimborazo Basecamp Lodge (3,900 m). Spend the rest of the day resting and acclimatizing, with short walks to spot vicuñas, llamas, alpacas, and birdlife. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included; overnight at the lodge.

Day 5 — Glacier Training

After breakfast, drive about an hour to the Carrel Refuge (4,800 m) for the day's acclimatization hike and Glacier School. Your ASEGUIM guide covers crampons, ice axe, harness, rope systems, glacier travel, balance, and self-arrest. Conditions permitting, the hike continues to around 5,300 m before descending to the lodge for lunch and an afternoon of recovery. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and trail snacks included; overnight at the lodge.

Day 6 — High Camp

After lunch at Chimborazo Basecamp (3,900 m), drive to 4,800 m and begin a two-hour trek to High Camp at 5,300 m. Settle into the geodesic dome campsite for meals, rest, and final preparations. At midnight, the ascent toward the summit begins across glaciated terrain. Overnight at High Camp.

Day 7 — Chimborazo Summit (6,263 m)

Following a midnight departure, a light snack, gear check, and safety briefing, rope up for the ascent across snowfields and glacier terrain toward the Veintimilla (6,230 m) and Whymper (6,263 m) summits. The climb takes 6–7 hours, with a summit window between 6:00 and 7:30 a.m. and sweeping views across the Andes. Descend to High Camp for a hot breakfast, then continue to the Carrel Refuge (4,800 m), collect luggage at the lodge, and return to Quito, concluding the expedition.
