Overview

overview

This 3-day expedition is a fast, focused climb of Chimborazo's Whymper summit (6,263m) — the highest peak in Ecuador and the closest point on Earth to the sun. Starting and ending in Riobamba, the itinerary packs acclimatization and the summit push into a tight, efficient schedule: a self-guided acclimatization hike up to 5,100 meters inside Chimborazo National Park on day one, an afternoon ascent to Camp 1 at 5,300 meters on day two, and a late-night summit push timed to reach the top at sunrise on day three.

The climb itself takes 6 to 10 hours depending on weather and group pace, with steady progress across snow and ice fields under the guidance of certified ASEGUIM guides. The summit window falls between 6:00 and 7:30 a.m., rewarding climbers with sunrise views from the roof of Ecuador before the descent to Camp 1 for a warm breakfast and the return journey to Riobamba. This is a physically demanding high-altitude climb best suited to fit climbers, ideally with prior acclimatization.

The trip includes ASEGUIM guides, transportation, meals at the refuge, water and snacks, high camp accommodation, climbing permits, climbing gear, and adventure insurance. Guests need to bring their own backpack (20–30 liter attack pack), sunglasses, snow goggles, and inner layer gloves. Tips are not included (suggested $10 or more), and travel to Riobamba and international airfare are arranged by guests themselves.
